The oasis was the paradise I had dreamed of
the boat was full of coconuts and it kept floating closer
I reached and reached, knew if I could just grasp
if I could just drink
if I could just grow
I could feed us all.
We were stuck in the desert
begging for better food
& just there in the distance sat the boat
The rich man had it tethered just slightly off coast
but the tide never came in.
I thought about giving up hope
try another tactic
use it as a dream or a lesson
either answer it was time for action
and less stressing.

Hard drop to white sand,
sweaty from palm climbing,
he counted coconuts.
A good yield, a great day!
He smiled broadly
at his little boat, the blue sky,
bright sun, white sand,
shouldered his flashing machete
& walked down-beach
to sell milk to the Bikinis
in his shared paradise.

We were so well embraced in the hammock under the coconut palms
you offered me a boat ride kissing me in the light of sunset
you showed me all your attention and kindness in those few days you were with me
you never offended or humiliated me
you’ve always been discreet, even when you paid me
my little personal paradise fled with you, in your memories and in your tenderness
I thank you for the brief sensation I could only imagine
