NO PURPOSE, NO MATTER

“I don’t know where I’m going but I’m on my way.”
-Unknown

Very often, we talk about “finding ourselves” and searching for a specific purpose in life. But is that always necessary? Can one only be content when working towards a specific goal?

In my opinion, not always. In certain endeavors, you no doubt should have a specific goal. If no other reason, then to just have an ideal situation.

If your first job after college is in a specific vocation you’re passionate about, you’ll be a lot happier paying the bills. If you’re driving to a timely event, you obviously need to know where you’re going to be there on time. If you’re going buy groceries, they’re obviously specific to what you’re out of.

But in broader terms, being directionless is not necessarily a bad thing. Partly because goals change. Passion deviates. What you thought you wanted at an earlier age may be the furthest thing from your mind when you’re older.

The important thing is to always keep going even if your destination is not definitive. It’s important to work toward SOMETHING. Even something as random as going to the beach gives you something; it gives you joy and possibly, a nice tan.

But that “something” need not be something significantly pivotal. Just being active will ensure some kind of fruition as long the road you’re going down is not illegal or immoral.

Sometimes the pressure of finding a purpose might even prove to be more adversarial than advantageous. If you stress yourself out for every step in your life, you’ll never be satisfied with anything you do.

But if you simply remind yourself of the Newton’s third law, “Every action has a reaction,” you’ll be alert enough of your decisions without overanalyzing them.

The next time either you or someone you know feel “lost,” don’t sweat it. Just make sure that feeling doesn’t equate to sitting idle.

I think it is important to have a purpose in life, but it doesn’t have to rule your world. you make a lot of sense as I sometimes wonder what my purpose is!!
